About the Blimp
A blimp is a soft airship that has no metal skeleton inside; it keeps its smooth shape only from the pressure of the gas that fills it. That gas is helium, which is lighter than air, so the whole craft floats gently. Blimps move slowly and steadily, which is why you often see them carrying advertising signs or cameras high above sports games. Point out the round nose and tail fins as kids steer a pencil from end to end.
- Unlike a rigid airship, a blimp would go limp if its gas leaked out, because nothing else holds its shape.
- Their slow, steady flight makes blimps useful for filming events from above.
