About the Hot Air Balloon
A hot air balloon rises because the air inside its huge fabric bag is heated by a flame, making it lighter than the cooler air around it. Passengers ride in a basket hung beneath the balloon, with a propane burner roaring above their heads to keep the air warm. Balloons like these carried the first people ever to leave the ground, long before airplanes existed. Bring this outline to a weather or 'things that fly' lesson and let children color the stripes after they finish.
- The balloon's fabric bag is called an envelope, and it does not need to be sealed at the bottom.
- A balloon floats simply because warm air is lighter than cold air.
