About the Parachute
A parachute is a wide canopy of fabric that fills with air to slow something falling through the sky. As it opens it catches the air and creates drag, letting a person or a load drift down safely instead of dropping fast. Besides carrying people who jump from planes, parachutes gently lower cargo and even help spacecraft land back on Earth. Trace the lines from the canopy down to the tiny figure below for a satisfying fine-motor challenge.
- Modern parachutes are usually made from strong nylon and come in dome and rectangular shapes.
- Parachutes have helped land spacecraft on Mars, not just skydivers on Earth.
