About the Glider
With wings but no engine, a glider stays up by riding rising currents of warm air. Pilots are often towed into the sky by another plane, then release the rope and soar silently on their own. Skilled glider pilots can stay aloft for hours by finding invisible columns of lifting air called thermals. This quiet flier makes a calm tracing activity, following the long slim wings from tip to tip.
- Gliders have long, thin wings that help them slip through the air with very little drag.
- Warm air rising off sunny ground, called a thermal, can lift a glider higher without any engine.
