About the Oak
The oak is a hardwood tree in the genus Quercus, part of the same family as beech. You can often recognize one by its lobed leaves and by the acorn, a smooth nut that grows in its own woody cup. Oaks have been around a very long time, with fossil oaks dating back tens of millions of years. Wind through the broad crown of this oak maze, a sturdy pick for an autumn-leaves or woodland lesson.
- There are about 500 kinds of oak, growing across the Northern Hemisphere.
- Oak species hybridize freely, which makes the genus's history hard to trace.
