About the Birch
A birch is a slim, deciduous hardwood tree of the genus Betula, at home in the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Many birches have pale bark that peels away in thin, papery strips, which makes them easy to recognize in a wood. They are often pioneer trees, among the first to spring up on open or cleared ground. Trace the slender trunk to the top of this birch maze, a bright fit for a woodland or tree-bark study.
- Birch bark peels off in thin strips, almost like sheets of paper.
- Birches are pioneer trees, quick to grow on cleared or open land.
- The birch family also includes alders, hazels, and hornbeams.
