About the Pine
A pine is an evergreen conifer that holds its needle-shaped leaves all through the year rather than dropping them each fall. Its needles grow in neat little bundles, usually two to five to a cluster, which is one way to tell pines apart from other evergreens. Rather than fruit, a pine makes woody cones that shelter its seeds between the scales. Follow the branches of this pine to the end of the maze, then add it to a forest or evergreen nature-study table.
- Pine seeds sit on woody cones, with two seeds under each cone scale.
- Pinus is the only genus in its subfamily, the Pinoideae.
