About the Manta Ray
The manta ray is a giant, gentle ray that glides through warm oceans by flapping its wide, wing-like fins. The largest kind can measure about 7 metres from tip to tip, wider than most cars are long, yet it feeds only on tiny drifting plankton. Mantas have one of the largest brains for their body size of any fish and are curious, intelligent swimmers. This maze fits an ocean or under-the-sea unit, and the broad wings give kids plenty of room to trace the path.
- Two horn-shaped fins by the mouth funnel food inside as it swims.
- Unlike stingrays, mantas have no stinging barb and are harmless to people.
- Like sharks, their skeleton is made of cartilage, not bone.
