About the Oyster
An oyster is a sea animal that lives inside two rough, hard shells hinged together. It stays in one spot on the seabed, filtering tiny bits of food from the water that flows past. Now and then an oyster wraps a shiny coating around a grain of grit inside its shell, and over time that becomes a pearl. Use this in an ocean unit and trace the path across the bumpy shell.
- An oyster's body sits between two hard shells joined by a hinge.
- Oysters filter their food from the seawater around them.
- A pearl forms when an oyster coats a piece of grit inside its shell.
