About the Mussel
A mussel is a shellfish with two dark, oval shells joined at a hinge. It holds tightly to rocks and pilings with a bunch of strong, sticky threads it spins itself, so waves cannot wash it away. Like oysters, mussels feed by straining tiny bits of food from the water. Print this for a tide-pool unit and trace along the smooth shell.
- Mussels anchor to rocks with tough threads they make themselves.
- They feed by filtering small bits of food from the water.
- Mussels live in both the sea and in freshwater rivers and lakes.
