About the Drum

A drum makes sound when you strike the tight skin, called the drumhead, stretched across the top of its shell. You can hit it with your hands or with sticks, and the hollow body underneath makes the beat boom. Drums are among the oldest instruments in the world, and their basic design has barely changed in thousands of years. Use this sheet to open a rhythm lesson, then let kids tap out a beat once they reach the end.

  • The stretched skin on top is called the drumhead or drum skin.
  • Drums belong to the percussion group and are played by being struck.
  • Most drums have a second head on the underside that rings along.
