About the Cello

The cello is a large member of the violin family with a deep, warm voice far lower than a violin. It is so big that players sit down and hold it upright between their knees while drawing a bow across the strings. A thin metal pin called an endpin props it up from the floor. This fits a strings lesson nicely, and the long body gives kids plenty of room to trace to the end.

  • The cello's four strings are tuned to C, G, D, and A, an octave below the viola.
  • An endpin sticking out of the bottom holds the cello up off the floor.
  • Its music is usually written in the bass clef.
