About the Flute
The flute is a woodwind instrument, but unlike most it has no reed. You make sound by blowing a stream of air across the hole near one end, the same way blowing across a bottle top makes a note. A modern concert flute is held out sideways, and its keys change the pitch as the air moves through. This sheet works well in a woodwind lesson, where children can trace along the tube from mouthpiece to the far end.
- A flute makes sound from air alone, with no reed or string.
- The concert flute is held out to the side rather than pointed down.
- A player of the flute is called a flautist or flutist.
