About the Double bass
The double bass is the biggest and lowest-sounding string instrument in the orchestra. It is so tall that players stand up or lean on a high stool to reach across it, either bowing the strings or plucking them for a deep, thumping sound. You will hear it holding down the low notes in orchestras, jazz bands, and even bluegrass. Print it for a lesson about high and low sounds and trace up the long neck to the scroll.
- The double bass usually has four strings, though some have five for extra-low notes.
- It is the largest and lowest instrument of the string family.
- It goes by many names, including upright bass, string bass, and contrabass.
