About the Firefly
Fireflies are not flies at all but soft-bodied beetles, also called lightning bugs. They glow by making their own cold light in the lower part of the body, flashing at dusk mainly to signal to mates. In one twist of nature, females of one kind copy the flash pattern of another kind to lure in males and eat them. Print this firefly for a summer-evening nature lesson about animals that make their own light.
- Fireflies are beetles, not flies, with more than 2,400 species.
- Their glow is nearly heat-free light used mostly to attract mates.
- The light first evolved as a warning that the larvae taste bad.
