About the Termite
Termites are social insects that live in huge colonies and feed on wood and other decaying plant material. Though their pale workers earned them the nickname white ants, termites are not ants at all — they are actually a highly specialized kind of cockroach. Together a colony can break down fallen logs and recycle them back into the soil. Slide this termite into a lesson on the tiny insects that clean up the forest floor.
- Despite the name white ant, termites are closely related to cockroaches.
- They feed on wood, leaf litter, and other decaying plant matter.
- About 3,000 termite species have been described.
