About the Mosquito
Mosquitoes are small flies with a long, needle-like mouthpart called a proboscis. It surprises many people that every mosquito drinks flower nectar, and only the females of certain species also feed on blood, which they need to make eggs. Scientists see them as tiny predators that feed on much larger animals without killing them. This outline pairs well with a wetland lesson about the insects that live near water.
- All mosquitoes drink nectar; only females of some species also drink blood.
- Females feed on blood to help produce their eggs.
- There are about 3,600 mosquito species worldwide.
