About the Moth
Moths are winged insects closely related to butterflies, usually with duller, more patterned wings. They actually outnumber butterflies by far, with around 160,000 known species and many more still unnamed. Most fly at night, which is why they often gather around porch lights after dark. This outline works nicely for a nighttime-nature lesson, tracing a path between the two broad wings.
- There are roughly 160,000 moth species, far more than butterflies.
- Most moths are active at night rather than during the day.
- Moths and butterflies together make up the order Lepidoptera.
