About the Cardinal
The northern cardinal is a bright songbird common in gardens and woodlands across North America. The male is a vivid red all over with a black mask around the beak, while the female is a softer brown with red touches. Both wear a pointed crest of feathers on the head that they can raise and lower. This maze fits a backyard-birds or winter unit, since cardinals stay red even against the snow, and the crest points the way in.
- Males are bright red while females are mostly brown.
- A short, strong beak lets them crack open seeds.
- Cardinals stay all winter instead of flying south.
