About the Trombone
The trombone is a brass instrument that is special because it has a long sliding tube instead of valves. The player buzzes their lips into the mouthpiece and pushes the slide in and out to reach different notes, gliding smoothly from one to the next. That sliding motion gives it a playful, sometimes comical voice. Add it to a brass lesson and trace the path out along the slide and back.
- Most trombones change pitch with a sliding tube rather than valves.
- The player's buzzing lips start the sound, as on all brass instruments.
- A rarer valve trombone uses three valves instead of a slide.
