About the Piccolo

The piccolo is a tiny flute, the smallest woodwind, and it plays the highest notes in the orchestra. It works just like a full-size flute, with the same fingerings, but sounds a whole octave higher, so its bright whistle can be heard over an entire band. In Italian it is called the ottavino. Print this for a music lesson comparing big and small instruments and trace along the little tube.

  • The piccolo sounds one octave higher than the standard flute.
  • It is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the woodwind family.
  • Its fingerings are the same as those of a normal flute.
