About the Mammoth
Covered in thick, shaggy fur, the woolly mammoth was a huge relative of today's elephants that lived through the ice ages. A layer of fat under the skin kept it warm, and its long tusks curved and twisted as they grew. Some mammoths were still alive only about 4,000 years ago, around the time the first pyramids were being built, so they are far more recent than the dinosaurs. Print this mammoth maze for an ice-age or prehistoric unit and let kids trace the great curving tusks to the finish.
- A mammoth was a mammal, a close relative of elephants, not a dinosaur.
- Its spiralling tusks could grow up to about 15 feet long.
- Mammoths lived across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.
