About the Windpipe, ringed trachea tube
The windpipe is the tube that carries air from your throat down toward your lungs. It is held open by a row of stiff rings, a bit like the ridges on a vacuum hose, so it never collapses shut. At the bottom it splits into two branches, one for each lung. Trace the ringed tube down from the throat for a lesson on breathing.
- Stiff rings hold the windpipe open so air can always pass through.
- At the bottom, the windpipe splits into two tubes, one for each lung.
