About the Heron
Long-legged and patient, herons are tall wading birds with long necks and sharp, pointed beaks. They stand in shallow water or along the shore, holding perfectly still as they watch for fish. When a fish swims close, the heron strikes in a flash and grabs it with its spear-like beak. Trace the long legs and neck during a pond or wetland lesson.
- A heron holds still in the water and waits to strike at fish.
- Herons fly with their long necks folded back into an S-shape.
