About the Turtle

Carrying a hard shell grown mostly from its own ribs, a turtle has built-in armor wherever it goes. There are hundreds of kinds, from land tortoises to river terrapins to sea turtles that spend their lives in the ocean. All of them breathe air, even the ones that swim, so sea turtles must surface for a breath. Add it to an ocean, pond, or reptile unit and let kids trace the path across the patterned shell.

  • A turtle's shell is part of its skeleton, formed largely from its ribs and backbone.
  • Turtles have a beak instead of teeth.
  • Even sea turtles breathe air and must come up to the surface.
