About the Penguin
Penguins are birds that cannot fly but are wonderful swimmers, using their wings as flippers to shoot through the water. Almost all of them live in the Southern Hemisphere, and their black-and-white coloring helps hide them from predators above and below. Some penguins court a mate by offering a smooth pebble as a kind of gift. A great match for a polar or Antarctic theme, with the beak pointing kids toward the start.
- Penguins can't fly, but their flipper-like wings make them fast swimmers.
- Nearly all penguins live south of the equator, with only the Galapagos penguin living farther north.
- Their black-and-white coloring helps camouflage them in the water.
