About the Coral
Coral may look like a colorful plant or rock, but it is really made of thousands of tiny animals called polyps living together. Each polyp builds a hard cup of stone around itself, and over many years these stony homes pile up to form the huge reefs that shelter countless sea creatures. A coral reef is one of the busiest places in the whole ocean. Use this in a coral-reef unit and trace the path through the branching coral.
- Coral is built by tiny animals called polyps, not by plants.
- Reef-building corals make hard, stony skeletons that pile up over time.
- Coral reefs shelter a huge share of all ocean life.
