About the Beluga Whale

The beluga is a small white whale that lives in the cold Arctic seas. It is the only whale that is all white, and it has a rounded forehead, called a melon, that it can change shape to make different sounds. Belugas are so noisy and full of whistles and chirps that sailors nicknamed them the canaries of the sea. Use this in an ocean unit and trace the path along the whale's smooth white body.

  • The beluga is the only whale that is entirely white.
  • Its chatty, high whistles earned it the nickname sea canary.
  • The rounded bump on its head is called a melon.
