About the Iris
The iris is a garden flower known for a striking arrangement of petals: three that stand upright and three that arch and droop toward the ground. Many kinds grow from bulbs or thick underground stems and bloom in spring. Irises come in a wide sweep of colors, and the flower gave its name to the colored ring of the human eye. This shape rewards careful tracing, since the upright and drooping petals give it a clear top and bottom.
- An iris flower has three upright petals and three that curve downward.
- The colored part of your eye is also called the iris, named for the flower's range of colors.
