About the Castle
Castles are large stone forts built long ago as strong homes for kings, queens, and lords. Thick walls, high towers, and sometimes a water-filled moat helped the people inside stay safe from attackers. Many had a drawbridge that could be raised to seal off the only way in. Slot this into a knights-and-castles topic and let children trace the route up to the tallest tower.
- Castle windows were often narrow slits so defenders could shoot arrows out while staying protected.
- A large castle could take many years, sometimes decades, to build.
- The moat around a castle was a deep ditch, often filled with water, to keep enemies out.
