About the Windmill
Big sails that turn in the wind give a windmill its power. For hundreds of years that spinning turned heavy stones that ground grain into flour for bread. The first ones with upright sails appeared in northwestern Europe about 900 years ago, while even older designs turned in faraway Persia. Add this to a farm or weather unit and talk about how wind can do real work as children solve the path.
- The spinning sails of a windmill were used to grind grain into flour.
- Windmills have also been used to pump water and, today, to help make electricity.
