About the Lion
The lion is a large, powerful cat that lives in the grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa and a small part of India. Males are bigger than females and grow a thick mane around the head and shoulders, which females do not have. A lion's roar is so loud it can carry for several miles, helping the pride keep track of one another. Kids learning the letter L can trace the lion here before coloring in its golden mane.
- Only male lions grow the shaggy mane, so it's an easy way to tell males from females.
- Lions live in family groups called prides and are the most social of the big cats.
- A lion's roar can be heard from up to about five miles away.
