About the Kangaroo
Kangaroos are Australian marsupials that travel by hopping on their strong back legs. A mother carries her tiny baby, called a joey, in a pouch on her belly until it is big enough to hop on its own. Their body shape makes it very hard to move backward, so kangaroos almost always go forward. This works well in an Australian-animals unit, bounding along the path from start to pouch.
- Baby kangaroos, called joeys, ride in their mother's pouch.
- Kangaroos move by hopping and struggle to walk backward.
- The red kangaroo is the largest of all kangaroos.
