About the Camel
Built for life in hot, dry places, camels are large animals famous for the humps on their backs. A hump stores fat, not water, giving the camel energy so it can travel a long way between meals. Most camels have one hump, though the Bactrian camel of Central Asia has two. Set this in a desert theme, following the path over the sandy dunes.
- A camel's hump stores fat, not water, for energy on long journeys.
- The one-humped dromedary is by far the most common camel.
- Bactrian camels, from Central Asia, have two humps.
