About the Surfboard
A surfboard is a light, narrow board that a surfer stands on to ride ocean waves. Surfing began over 1,000 years ago in ancient Hawaii, where the first boards were carved from wood and could be over 15 feet long and very heavy. Modern boards are much lighter and have one or more fins on the underside to help steer and keep them steady. This printable fits a beach or ocean-sports theme, and the long board shape is easy to trace from nose to tail.
- The oldest surfboards were carved from Hawaiian trees such as koa.
- A surfer lies down to paddle out, then stands up to ride the wave.
- Fins were later added underneath to help the board steer.
