About the Cowbell
A cowbell started out as a real bell hung around the neck of a cow or goat so farmers could hear where their animals wandered. As a musical instrument it has no clapper inside, so a player taps the outside with a stick to make a bright, clanking beat. It shows up in Latin music, rock, and marching bands. Use this in a rhythm lesson and trace down to the open mouth of the bell.
- Cowbells were first worn by grazing animals so herders could find them.
- As an instrument, it is struck with a stick instead of having a clapper.
- Its bright clank keeps a beat in many kinds of music.
