About the Water Strider
Water striders are slender insects that skate across the surface of ponds and streams without sinking. Tiny water-repelling hairs on their legs let them spread their weight and stand right on top of the water. From there they feel for ripples and dart to catch small insects that fall in. Print this water strider for a pond lesson on how some insects walk on water.
- Water striders walk on top of the water without sinking.
- Water-repelling leg hairs let them stand on the surface.
- Over 1,700 species live on ponds, rivers, and lakes.
