About the Mayfly
Mayflies are delicate insects that spend most of their lives as young underwater, in streams and ponds. Once they become winged adults, though, they may live only a day or two — just long enough to mate. That short adult life gives the order its name, Ephemeroptera, meaning short-lived. Add this mayfly to a freshwater lesson about insects that grow up in the water.
- Mayflies live underwater as young and only briefly as flying adults.
- An adult mayfly may live just a day or two.
- There are more than 3,000 mayfly species.
