About the Sock
A sock is a soft piece of clothing that slips over the foot and often reaches partway up the ankle or calf. It cushions the foot inside a shoe and helps keep it warm and dry. Long ago socks were made from leather or matted animal hair, until knitting machines began turning them out in the late 1500s. Socks make a fun counting task: trace a few, then pair them up like laundry.
- Early socks were made from leather or animal hair before machine knitting.
- Socks are usually worn in pairs, one for each foot.
