About the Platypus
The platypus is one of the strangest animals in the world, a mammal with a bill like a duck, webbed feet, and a flat tail. It lives in the rivers of eastern Australia and, unlike almost all other mammals, lays eggs instead of giving birth to live young. When hunting underwater with its eyes shut, it senses tiny electric signals given off by its prey. A memorable choice for an Australian-animals or unusual-animals theme.
- A platypus lays eggs, which is very rare for a mammal.
- It hunts underwater by sensing electric signals with its bill.
- Male platypuses have a venomous spur on each back foot.
