About the Carrot

Growing down into the soil with a leafy green top above ground, a carrot is a root vegetable. Its bright orange color comes from a nutrient called beta-carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A to help your eyes. Not all carrots are orange, though, since older kinds can be purple, yellow, red, or white. Use this printable for a garden or colors lesson, tracing the long root down to its pointed tip.

  • A carrot is the root of the plant, growing underground.
  • Its orange color comes from beta-carotene.
  • Some carrot varieties are purple, yellow, white, or red.
