About the Hazel tree
Hazels are small deciduous trees and large shrubs, usually placed in the birch family. They grow the hazelnut, a round nut in a leafy husk that ripens in autumn, and squirrels are quick to gather and bury them as a winter store. In late winter, hazels also dangle long yellow catkins full of pollen. Wind through the branches of this hazel maze, a woodland fit for a nuts or animals-in-autumn lesson.
- Squirrels love to hide away hazelnuts for the winter.
- Hazels dangle long yellow catkins in late winter.
- The hazel is usually grouped with the birch family of trees.
