About the Barnacle
A barnacle is a small sea creature that spends its grown-up life glued firmly in one place, on rocks, boats, or even the skin of a whale. It builds a little cone of hard plates around itself and, when the tide covers it, opens the top and sweeps feathery legs through the water to catch food. Surprisingly, barnacles are relatives of crabs and lobsters. Use this in a tide-pool unit and trace the path to the barnacle on the rock.
- A barnacle cements itself to one spot for the rest of its life.
- It feeds by combing food from the water with feathery legs.
- Barnacles are crustaceans, related to crabs and lobsters.
