About the Monarch Butterfly
The monarch is one of North America's most familiar butterflies, easy to know by its orange wings crossed with black veins and dotted white edges. Monarchs are famous for traveling astonishing distances, flying thousands of miles to warmer places as the seasons change. A look-alike butterfly, the viceroy, copies the monarch's colors but is smaller and has an extra stripe. Add this monarch to a lesson on migration and the milkweed its caterpillars depend on.
- Monarchs migrate thousands of miles between seasons.
- Their caterpillars feed on milkweed plants.
- The viceroy butterfly mimics the monarch's orange-and-black pattern.
