About the Crocus
Crocuses are small, cup-shaped flowers that grow from underground stems called corms, with about a hundred species in the iris family. They are among the earliest flowers of the year, sometimes pushing up through the last of the snow. One autumn-blooming crocus gives us saffron, the deep-orange spice taken from its threads. Print this small flower for an early-spring nature activity and color it in purple, white, or gold.
- The spice saffron comes from the threads inside one kind of crocus flower.
- Crocuses are among the first flowers to bloom, sometimes through the snow.
